Seahawks Tutus for the Superbowl: A tutu tutorial (sort of)

My mom’s friends asked us to make them after we made a tutu for our friend’s niece’s birthday. They were so excited to see it they asked mom if she could make them some, too. Of course, she had to say yes.

So, yesterday, she came home with a ton of tulle by the yard in white, navy blue, lime green these were not by the spool, each strip needed to be cut individually.  We cut it 6 inches by 60 inches because we wanted longer tutus, but for children you can cut it 6 inches by  anywhere from 30 to 40 inches.

We measured out the tulle by folding it.

Then began cutting it into 6 inch strips. Again, because we wanted it longer, we cut it into long strips.

After we cut the strips, we measured out the elastic (3/4″ no-roll elastic) for mom’s friends waists. To take stretching into account, we cut it 3 inches less than the size of the waist and sewed it together.

Then, with each color, we tied it the tulle strips in double knots around the elastic (some people use slip knots, but I prefer regular knots doubled), being very careful not to bend the elastic.

Mom tried it on.

We loved it, but…Something was missing.

Ribbon and glitter!

We added some white glitter tulle and wrapped the waistband with white satin ribbon (for comfort and design) and tied a big loopy bow!

It was perfect!

Mom’s friends will be decked out for the Superbowl, and we were able to get some tutu practice done for Hapa Baby’s Birthday Party!
